Cherry compote with yogurt
Cherry compote with

, , . The first meal of the day and my second thought of the day. My first being: ‘Just five more minutes.’ Cue duvet being flipped back over head.

My regular summer breakfast is Bircher muesli, but occasionally I mix things up and have something else instead. I know. I live a wild life and carrying on like this can only lead to an early grave. Actually, days like last Sunday when I tasted and shot two gins for future reviews before breakfast really could do some damage. But, at worst, this cherry compote will only lead to a mid-morning sugar crash and I can manage that with biscuits.

Cherry compote with yogurt
Serves 2

250g , pitted
30g caster sugar
A tiny pinch of ground cinnamon
Plain yogurt, to serve

1 Place the cherries, caster sugar and cinnamon into a small pan with 1 tbsp water. Heat very gently for 5 minutes until the juices are running. Give it a stir and a taste. Add more sugar and cinnamon if necessary.

2 If you’ve added  more sugar, keep heating it until all the sugar has dissolved. Otherwise, remove from the heat and let it cool for 5–10 minutes, then spoon over plain yogurt. The compote is also good chilled and this makes as nice a dessert as it does a breakfast.
